Sometimes I will get asked...
What is a cake smash photoshoot?
I believe cake smash photoshoots originated in America and soon became a popular trend all over including here in the uk. Cake smash photoshoots are to celebrate the big milestone of your baby’s first ever birthday! From the time your baby begins their weaning journey onto solids from just milk, food is incredibly fun for them! So many new textures and flavours, and it’s usually very messy as they explore all the new foods you give them. A cake smash session is a great way of celebrating their first birthday, they get to eat and play with their own special birthday cake whilst we capture the joyful, excited, happy, surprised expressions in photographs to treasure.
Our Cake Smash & Splash photoshoots are split into 3 parts, to give you a wide variety of images in your finished gallery;
Part 1 - We begin with some natural ‘clean’ images, where your baby can play, sit or crawl around while we capture some natural portrait images before things get messy. This is a good opportunity to jump in with them and capture a family portrait if you wish to.
Part 2 - The main event! You will change your baby into their cake smash outfit (which you can either bring with you or choose from the selection I have in the studio wardrobe) and we move them to the bespoke backdrop you have chosen for them; when you book in for a cake smash photoshoot I will ask you what kind of theme or colours you would like for the backdrop, you can be as creative or as minimal as you like! Be it pinks, grey, blues, sunflowers, under-the-sea, teddy bears picnic… we can pretty much do most ideas, using all sorts of props including balloons, paper pompoms, foliage, stuffed toys, fairy lights etc, and all of this will be discussed with you prior to the session as we design the backdrop.
A delicious bespoke cake is also provided for your baby, made locally by a registered baker, and we bring this out and place it in front of your baby for them to devour as they wish! Some get stuck right in with both hands, take big bites out of the top, even sit on it! Others delicately pick at the decorations or little crumbs on their fingers, take small slivers of icing off to try.
Part 3 - The splash part. There will come a time when your baby is either full up or had enough of the cake, at which point I will clear away the cake (which can be boxed up for you to take home and enjoy later on together) while you change your baby out of their outfit and I bring out a little tin tub filled with warm soapy water. Your baby will love having a little splash while we blow bubbles for them to pop, with the added bonus of getting all nice and clean in there while I capture a few last pictures, before you can scoop them up for a snuggly towel cuddle to dry off.
Most babies love the cake, on the rare occasion they may not be so sure and don’t want to eat much, we either add in a wooden spoon to help break up the cake so that it looks like it has been ‘smashed’, and/or a little trick of hiding some beige crisps (quavers for example) to make it look like they have sponge cake in their little hands for the photos.
This is a great way to document your baby turning one especially if you are unsure of how best to do so. You can invest in a cake smash session alongside a family party celebration or birthday day out, and you take away from it memories that are captured and printed to treasure as your little one grows up
