Updated: Mar 9, 2023

If you have recently had a baby or are due soon, congratulations! You might be considering booking a newborn photography photoshoot, so I have compiled a list of commonly asked questions and lots of useful information.

Why should I book a newborn photoshoot?

-Newborn photoshoots are an investment, and leave you with beautiful photographs that document and capture this beautiful, life-changing, crazy, wonderful time in your lives which passes so incredibly quickly, babies really don’t stay little for long.

-During your newborn session with me at Little Yellow Boots Photography we capture all those teeny details and features like baby wrinkles, little fingers, very tiny toes, cherry lips, fine whispy hairs, lashes and soft baby chubby rolls!. Some of these detail images will include your hands, which shows just how little your baby was as a newborn against the size of your hands.

-We also capture prop images, where your baby is carefully wrapped/swaddled and placed in a basket or box filled with various layers and textures for those colourful artsy images, along with semi-naked or completely nappy-free photos of your sweet baby curled up in natural poses, and parent/family images plus images of your baby with any older siblings.

-The Newborn stage passes by in a blur of feeds, changes, recovery, lack of sleep and baby brain fog, so to have beautiful images of your baby from when they were so fresh and tiny is something to treasure and keep for a lifetime.

When should I book a newborn photoshoot?

-It is always advantageous to book in advance while you are still pregnant, to ensure you can get booked in when your baby arrives, however I am usually able to squeeze in last-minute newborn sessions for those of you who don’t think about having a photoshoot until just after your baby has been born.

-Newborn photoshoots are best taking place within the first 2-3 weeks when baby still naturally curls up and sleeps a lot! If your baby is older than 3 weeks though please still get in touch and we can discuss how we can still try to achieve those newborn photos.

Where will the photoshoot take place?

-I have a lovely warm studio in York where you come for your newborn photoshoot, it is conveniently situated opposite a large free carpark, has a range of shops nearby and is easily accessible from outside of York as well as local to York residents.

-Inside the studio you will find a large variety of props for use during your session, including hats, headbands, props, blankets, wraps, layers, flowers and foliage, backdrops and more, which you can choose from. Your images can be as simple and minimal to as bright and colourful as you like, we discuss what you would like and design the prop set-ups together when you arrive for your session.

What do I need to bring?

-Bring with you your normal changing bag with spare nappies and a change of clothes for baby to go home in. If you are bottle feeding your baby bring enough formula or pre-made bottles for a few feeds, your session could last upto 3 hours and your baby needs to have a full tummy to be satisfied and able to sleep, hungry babies are not happy babies!

-Feel free to bring along snacks for yourselves, I have plenty of bottled water available for you but I have not yet re-introduced snacks and tea/coffee after covid restrictions. There are bakeries and food shops (including a supermarket) very nearby to pick-up something prior to your session.

-If you have other children coming along please bring plenty to keep them occupied, this can include toys, books, drawing, iPads etc. After we have captured family and sibling images, usually one parent will take the older child(ren) out for a while to visit the nearby park or local shops so they are not getting bored for the remainder of the session (toddlers in particular benefit from some space and fresh air after being in the studio environment for the first part of the session).

What should we wear for our family images?

-I usually photograph families on a light cream or white background, so light coloured clothing works really well. White, cream, beige, pastel colours and earthy colours (browns, greens etc) all work really well. Try to avoid clothing with logos or imagery on, or bold jazzy patterns, this can distract the focus of the images onto the clothing and away from your faces (not what we want to do!)

-For family images, try to keep your clothing along a similar colour palette so that you all compliment each other and blend nicely together. If you are unsure if something will work please contact me prior to your session to discuss your possible options.

-For many new mums, it can sometimes be tricky to find clothing you feel confident in just after you have given birth. Comfortable jeans with a blouse or loose top, a smock or floaty dress, maybe an oversized comfy jumper, all are good options if you are feeling at all self conscious.

-Pay attention to your feet, I ask that everyone remove their shoes before standing on any backdrops so you should either have plain socks or bare feet for your photos.

What does a newborn photoshoot include?

-Use of props in the studio, family/sibling and baby images, professional retouching, private online viewing gallery, digital images and prints are all included in your photoshoot.

-When booking your session, a deposit secures your chosen date and time slot. When your images have been professionally retouched, you receive an email link to your private online viewing gallery to view all of your beautiful images. You then have a selection of packages to choose from with different amounts of digital images and prints included in each to suit your budget. Your deposit is deducted from your chosen package. Your digital images are delivered via download fro your gallery, and with the top package you also receive a USB holding all of your images too. Your prints are ordered from my professional printing lab and when they arrive they are boxed up with ribbon detail ready for collection or delivery.

I have over 7 years experience photographing newborn babies, I also have four children of my own so I am very used to handling babies safely and confidently, and I have undergone newborn training to learn how to safely pose babies with secure equipment. Your babies’ safety and comfort is my upmost priority and I would NEVER pose your baby in a position that is risky or could bring harm to them. I regularly check babies’ temperature and observe their breathing whilst I am photographing them, I also watch for hunger cues or any signs that your baby may be uncomfortable with trapped wind. If your baby is showing signs that they are not happy in a pose or prop I quickly move onto something else, and spend time making sure your baby is happy and relaxed before even beginning to photograph them.

I hope this helps and thank you for reading!
