Our experience at Star Street Salon, Children's hairdresser in Acomb, York.
I have visited this incredible salon a few times now with my youngest two children, and wanted to write a blog post about our experience there and give a raving review about this gem of a hairdressers, and urge you to visit there with your little ones!
I first heard about Star Street on local parent pages on social media, and quickly found out it was in my local area and that it caters especially for children! This immediately got my attention... over the years I had tried several salons and barbers for my elder two children's haircuts, but we never really stuck to one as we didn't get that perfect haircut or great experience; anyone with toddlers and young children know the struggle of trying to encourage them to sit still for a hair cut or even just get into the chair in the first place, it can be really daunting to a child and not always a pleasant experience.
When it came to my third child's first haircut -a 'first' to log in the baby book and a nervous experience for a toddler not having been through it before- we chose a local salon that was recommended to us. My son was anxious, not relaxed and not willing to sit in the chair on his own, so I asked if it was possible to have him sit on me to be told 'no it's not allowed'. So we tried some distraction techniques and bribery, but after a short while and not much success we were told it wasn't going to happen and ushered out of there by the hairdresser (who wasn't particularly warm with children and seemed quite annoyed that my toddler wouldn't conform). I wasn't able to even encourage him through the door of the next salon we tried, he just wasn't happy after the first experience! Then lockdown happened and we resorted to dodgy home hair-cuts which never looked great and certainly weren't neat!
So when I heard about this amazing new children's Salon I had to at least try it out, it looked great from pictures I had seen. I booked my toddler in and then his appointment time rolled round... I was so nervous, not knowing how it would go or if he would even entertain going through the door when we got there, but he did! And as soon as he stepped foot inside he spied the car seats and his eyes lit up! He ran over to one of them and asked to be lifted in, so I didn't hesitate and once he was comfortably sat he was passed a tablet screen and asked what he would like to watch on it. He literally sat through the entire haircut not really aware it was being done, he was so relaxed and content watching his favourite cartoon to notice as his hair was trimmed and smartened up, and it looked so great when it was finished!
After he was done, he climbed down and went to play with the toys while I paid and chatted with Dawn, the salon owner and staff members, and thanked them many times for such a positive brilliant experience for us both.
I now take both my youngest two children there and these are their most recent hair-cuts (including before-and-afters).
Star Street opened in November 2021 and has quickly gained popularity amongst families in and around York. It is primarily aimed at young children but older children and even adults can enjoy having a haircut there. They have car chairs for younger ones to sit in complete with steering wheel, regular chairs for older children and adults, tablet screens to occupy children whilst being sat, a seating area with toys, music and sensory elements, a really cool VW camper van desk, a nail bar and selfie area! Various services are on offer including hair cuts, pampering and styling and even pamper parties! And all of the staff are so warm and welcoming, making sure children are happy and relaxed before beginning the appointment and just generally very friendly.
We recommend Star Street to everyone we know and I will always recommend them to all my clients right from when their babies are newborns, so they know where to go for a 'My first haircut'!
